I bought an atlas five years ago that I use very often. If I search for a special place, I take my atlas and look for the name I am interested in in the index. Then I thumb through my book to find the right page. When I have found the map of the place I am looking for, I try to memorize the position and the big rivers that are nearby. My atlas, which I use nearly every day, has about 500 pages. The maps I am most interested in are those of France, Austria and Sweden.
France that I visited several times has incredible regions. The city with the most inhabitants is also the capital city of France. It's Paris. Each year a lot of tourists spend their holidays in this big city, where are a lot of places of interest. Of course, the most famous construction is the Eiffel Tower. It was build between the years 1887 and 1889 by hundreds of workers. You find the tower, which is an icon for France and Paris at the same time, on post cards, posters, cups, places etc. A lot of souvenirs with the Eiffel Tower on them are sold each year to many tourists coming from all places of the world.
Besides Paris also the Loire Valley is a very fascinating place in France. More than 300 castles that are called châteaux in French can be visited in Amboise, Blois, Nantes, Tours and other places. In Southern France there are regions as Rhone-Alpes, Limousin or Aquitaine. A well known city in the north of Aquitaine is called Bordeaux. This port city that has more than one million inhabitants is located at a river called Garonne. Amongst others Bordeaux is very famous for its red wine. In Limousin you find e. g. the city Limoges, which is known for its porcelain. The twin towns of Limmoges are Fürth in Germany, Charlotte in the USA, Grodno in Belarus and Plzen in the Czech Republic. In the region Rhônes-Alpes there is Lyon, a city with about 1.8 million people living there. Its famous football team Olympique Lyon plays in the first French league and won a lot of championships since its foundation in the year 1899.
Another nice country in Central Europe beside France is Austria. In the index of my atlas you can find the names of the cities and towns Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Villach and others, if you look for Austria. Another name you find is, of course, the one of Austria's capital Vienna. There are living almost 1.700.000 people in the largest city of the country, where you can see a lot of cultural events. So e. g. more than 200 balls are presented each year. Another well known attraction in Vienna is the 'Wiener Prater'. This is a large park that is visited by many people each day, who are amongst others interested in using the famous Ferris wheel that is called Riesenrad in German.
In the northern part of Europe there is a state called Sweden. If I open my atlas to search for it, I am conducted to a page where I see all the Scandivian countries. These are Norway, Denmark, Finnland and, of course, Sweden. The language that is talked in this country is called Swedish. About 9 million people are living in Sweden, whose capital is the large city Stockholm. The musical culture of Sweden that goes back plenty of years has spreaded in the whole world. There are some very famous musicians and bands that are internationally known. A period in Sweden that is very fascinating for people of all ages was the time between the 8th and 11th century. This time is called the Swedish Viking Age. Vikings are known for exploring the European regions by boats.
Altogether I am very glad to own such a usefull book as my atlas. If I want to start a journey, I open my book and search for a location where I want to travel to in my mind. When I reach the page of the country I want to be, I cover the distance with my eyes and imagine how my travel could be. Sometimes I am so fascinated that I start a real journey to the places I found in my atlas. So I have already really been in France, Austria and Sweden. Thus I will search for a new destination in Europe, the United States, Africa, Asia or Australia.
